The Automation Systems Group (ASG) as part of the Institute of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Informatics, focuses on research in various topics related to distributed automation systems. Particular focus is put on factory automation, smart grids, home and building automation and their integration into the Internet/Web of Things (IoT/WoT). In addition, program analysis for real-time programs, formal methods for control systems and security and safety in automation are investigated. Current research topics at the group range from the comprehensive integration of heterogeneous (building) automation systems to smart home environments and applications. Within building automation, focus is put on the analysis and use of open standards, such as BACnet, KNX, LonWorks, IEEE 802.15.4, ZigBee, or 6LoWPAN, and automation systems integration based on management level approaches (Web Services and Service oriented Architectures resting upon e.g. OBIX, OPC UA, BACnet/WS). In this context, information modeling approaches with respect to machine-readable semantics and abstraction from heterogeneous technologies in the field and automation levels are developed. Applications of these integration and modeling efforts are, for example, better utilization of building automation for enhanced energy efficient operation in smart homes and smart buildings. In parallel, research and development efforts tackle cyber physical production systems, smart grids and the area of ‘Industrial Internet’.

Wolfgang Kastner is the head of the Automation Systems Group at the Technische Universität Wien. His research specializes in the development of control networks and distributed automation systems with a specific focus on industrial, home and building automation systems, and smart grids, including aspects of safety and security. He is actively involved in the development of approaches and techniques for secure and reliable cyber-physical production systems, smart buildings, and smart grids, and their integration into the Internet of Things. He has contributed as a program committee member to numerous conferences and workshops, and founded the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Technical Committee for Building Automation, Control and Management (IEEE-IES TC BACM).

    	abstract = "Building automation systems are traditionally concerned with the control of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, as well as lighting and shading systems. They have their origin in a time where security has been considered as a side-issue at best. Nowadays, with the rising desire to integrate security-critical services that were formerly provided by isolated subsystems, security must no longer be neglected. Thus, the development of a comprehensive security concept is of utmost importance. This paper starts with a security threat analysis and identifies the challenges of providing security in the building automation domain. Afterwards, the security mechanisms of available standards are thoroughly analyzed. Finally, two approaches that provide both secure communication and secure execution of possibly untrusted control applications are presented.",

Integrating CCTV systems into building automation systems provides the opportunity to react to critical events by, for example, informing the operator about the occurrence of such events, providing relevant video data, and most important concurrently initiating appropriate actions (e.g., smoke extraction in case of fire). This paper focuses on the integration of such smart camera systems into BACnet based networks. At first, a short introduction to BACnet and its interworking model is given. Afterwards, a possible way of integrating CCTV systems into BACnet is presented. The functionality of this model is shown by a proof-of-concept implementation which is also described in this paper.",

Extending KNX towards new application areas leads to increasing demands. This is especially true for the integration of applications from the security domain (e.g., access control and security alarm systems). They require the underlying control system to be reliable and robust against malicious manipulations (security attacks) to fulfil their purpose. For this reason, it is necessary to protect the exchanged process data (secure group communication) as well as prevent unauthorized use of the management services which are used for configuration and maintenance purposes (secure management communication). Since KNX was not designed for use in security critical environments, a security extension to KNX called EIBsec has been developed. EIBsec supports mechanisms to guarantee data confidentiality, integrity and freshness as well as an authentication service. Relevant configuration related issues such as key management and distribution are also addressed. An important feature of EIBsec is compatibility to standard KNX technology.",
