Switching to Parallel DEVS, some of those problems could be avoided, however other, similar problems in connection with mealy components and transient states occurred. In the following work, we try to locate the root of these problems and give a basic example to demonstrate them. Further, possible remedies in the form of modelling work-arounds inside the PDEVS formalism are described, although none of them seems to solve the problems sustainably. Eventually extensions of the formalism itself are proposed with the goal of easing the design of models including mealy components. Finally the consequences of such modifications for the simulation algorithms are discussed.",

abstract = "In this article, a method for implementing hybrid models, formulated as DEV{\&}DESS, in the QSS based simulator PowerDEVS is presented. PowerDEVS is actually a pure DEVS simulator. However, it is specialised for simulating continuous Models (DESS) using QSS (Quantized State System) to translate them into discrete event models (DEVS). Therefore, it is perfectly suited for the simulation of hybrid models (DEV{\&}DESS). When designing and simulating coupled DEVS models though, very soon a lot of difficulties occur caused by concurrent events and feedback loops. Hence, first some concepts are introduced of how to implement an atomic DEVS in a way that avoids those difficulties. Afterwards, an approach of how to implement an atomic DEV{\&}DESS is introduced which makes use of those concepts.",

abstract = "Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems are used in modern buildings for different purposes. By the use of smart cameras, dedicated safety or security-critical events that may lead to an alarm condition can be detected autonomously (e.g., safety events like fire or security events like glass break). Integrating CCTV systems into building automation systems provides the opportunity to react to critical events by, for example, informing the operator about the occurrence of such events, providing relevant video data, and most important concurrently initiating appropriate actions (e.g., smoke extraction in case of fire). This paper focuses on the integration of such smart camera systems into BACnet based networks. At first, a short introduction to BACnet and its interworking model is given. Afterwards, a possible way of integrating CCTV systems into BACnet is presented. The functionality of this model is shown by a proof-of-concept implementation which is also described in this paper.",

Therefore, interoperability between devices using various technologies is a key requirement. The use of Web Services as a platformand technological-independent method of communication is a promising approach to address this challenge. Since IP extensions to available technologies are more and more established in building automation systems the network infrastructure and necessary protocols for Web Services communication are already present. However, providing appropriate concepts to model information that can be accessed in a generic way are still missing. OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) is a powerful and promising standard that aims at solving this challenge. This work discusses an approach to map the interworking model of BACnet to OPC UA. Using the resulting information model BACnet applications can be represented in OPC UA and, thus, be accessed by OPC UA clients in a standard and well-defined way.",

A possible solution for this challenge is the use of Web services. Web services provide a generic, platform- and technological-independent way to access and manipulate information. Due to the use of IP networks in today's building automation systems, Web services are gaining increasely importance within the building automation domain. This is especially true for KNX systems, since the upcoming opportunity to use IP as native KNX medium provides new possibilities for integrating Web services into KNX. One of the most important technologies within this field is OPC UA. Therefore, this paper is dedicated to OPC UA in KNX. After an introduction to this technology, an approach to use OPC UA for KNX systems is presented. The paper is concluded with an outlook on OPC UA server and client solutions for KNX systems."

Relying on physically isolated networks and on ``Security by Obscurity'', as it is still common today, is by no means an adequate solution. With the introduction of interconnections to foreign networks (e.g., Web gateways to the Internet) and wireless technologies, the assumption of physical isolation is not longer valid. In parallel, building automation systems of the next generation shall also be home for tight integrated services with seamless interworking nodes of formerly separated systems. When security-critical integration is considered, this promises synergies, but significantly tightens requirements on the protocol stack. This paper summarizes the demands to be met by nodes participating in such an environment and presents necessary secure services that are part of the protocol architecture.",

However, with the use of IP also new attack scenarios that threaten the overall security of BAS are introduced. Due to the absence of native security mechanisms in IP and because of its long standing and pervasive use in the IT world, many vulnerabilities exist that are well-known to attackers. To counteracts these threats, this paper presents a generic concept to secure IP backbones that is tailored for the use in building automation. A main advantage of the concept is its flexibility. Due to the used protocol architecture, it is applicable to available BAS standards without the need of an adaption of existing BAS protocols. As a proof-of-concept, a prototype implementation for the KNX standard is also presented in the paper.",

abstract = "Building Automation Systems (BAS) aim at improving control and management of mechanical and electrical systems in buildings. It is the task of Sensors, Actuators and Controllers (SACs) to interact with the physical environment and perform measurement and control tasks. In building automation networks they, typically, consist of a network interface and a microcontroller (MCU) where an application specific hardware is attached. In a similar way, the software may be split into a system software part providing basic functionality and a (customizable) user application (UA) dealing with the attached hardware. Within KNX this concept is well known, as customized application modules are connected via the physical external interface to standardized bus attachment units. However, KNX UA development traditionally required profound hardware knowledge. This paper presents an approach to leverage user application development. With limited hardware resources of SACs in mind, an embedded virtual machine provides a lean environment for Java based user applications. Interfacing to KNX and the specific hardware is done by a well-defined Java user application programming interface. In addition, a management interface allows to download and configure UAs inside the virtual machine. The programming concept, configuration and management issues as well as the workflow are described in detail. As proof of concept for SACs supporting our approach two hardware platforms have been chosen: a stripboard equipped with an ATMega168 MCU and KNX connection via the Freebus project, and KNXcalibur, a Fujitsu MCU based board connected to KNX via TP-UART. The contribution is rounded up by a first performance analysis.",

abstract = "The core application area of KNX is environmental control with the traditional service types lighting/shading and Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning (HVAC). Extending KNX towards new application areas leads to increasing demands. This is especially true for the integration of applications from the security domain (e.g., access control and security alarm systems). They require the underlying control system to be reliable and robust against malicious manipulations (security attacks) to fulfil their purpose. For this reason, it is necessary to protect the exchanged process data (secure group communication) as well as prevent unauthorized use of the management services which are used for configuration and maintenance purposes (secure management communication). Since KNX was not designed for use in security critical environments, a security extension to KNX called EIBsec has been developed. EIBsec supports mechanisms to guarantee data confidentiality, integrity and freshness as well as an authentication service. Relevant configuration related issues such as key management and distribution are also addressed. An important feature of EIBsec is compatibility to standard KNX technology.",

Today such systems typically follow a twolayered hierarchical approach. While control networks interconnect distributed sensors, actuators and controllers, a backbone provides the necessary infrastructure for management tasks hosted by configuration and management devices. In addition, devices interconnecting the control network with the backbone on the one hand and the backbone with further networks (e.g., the Internet) on the other hand play a strategic role. According to their particular functionality and the resulting demands on the necessary hardware and software support, BAS devices can be categorized in three distinct device classes. Based upon this classification the paper presents a generic hardware and software framework whose flexible design fits all these classes. Devices for a particular purpose (i.e., class) can be derived from the universally applicable, generic framework, easing development. This process is demonstrated for a multi-purpose hardware platform applicable to multiple device classes. Moreover, three case studies for this platform are presented which illustrate how software applications from all classes make use of this universally applicable platform. }",

In particular, the integration of security subsystems significantly tightens security requirements on the protocol of a networked control system. First, this paper gives a survey on security in BAS. Possible threats and attacks are discussed. Weaknesses in the security mechanisms of important open networked BAS (LonWorks, BACnet, KNX/EIB) are summarized. abstract = "Home and Building Automation (HBA) systems are traditionally concerned with the control of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, as well as lighting and shading systems. Services from the safety and security domain are typically provided by separated, application specific subsystems. An integration with the core HBA systems is done (if at all) at the management level. Nowadays, the rising desire to integrate security-critical services even at the field level can be observed. The extension of the application domain of HBA systems therefore demands the underlying communication system to be reliable and robust against malicious manipulations. An analysis of existing technologies, however, exposes that they do not fulfill the additional requirements yet. The main reason is that the systems were developed at a time when security was considered as a side-issue at best. Hence, these systems rely on physical isolation and ``Security by Obscurity''. This is obviously unacceptable within modern HBA systems since preventing physical access to the network by isolation is not always possible (e.g., WLANs) and ``Security by Obscurity'' is a technique that (if at all) provides only temporary protection. Thus, the development of a comprehensive security concept is of utmost importance. This dissertation is focused on providing mechanisms for secure communication in HBA networks thus counteracting network attacks. Based on a security threat analysis, requirements and challenges for secure communication are identified. After an overview of state of the art technologies, a generic approach for securing communication in HBA networks is introduced. This approach uses the concept of secure communication relationships where communication entities like devices or control applications are able to securely join and leave these relationships. Additionally, a framework that implements this security approach based on a multi-protocol stack is described. To prove the feasibility, the proposed security concept is formally evaluated and a prototype implementation is presented.",

abstract = "{The deployment of home and building automation systems allows to increase comfort, safety and security and reduce operational cost. Today such systems typically follow a hierarchical distributed approach. While control networks interconnect smart sensors and actuators, a backbone network provides the infrastructure for management tasks. Devices interconnecting these networks have a strategic role. Especially in the home domain, the integration of various control and data networks is essential for maximum benefit. The European Installation Bus (KNX/EIB) is a popular control network designed to enhance electrical installations in buildings. It uses a proprietary twisted pair (TP) medium to interconnect devices like smart light switches and dimmers. The objective of this thesis is to design an embedded and versatile platform for ongoing development in the area of home and building automation systems with a focus on KNX/EIB TP. Besides two KNX/EIB TP interfaces, it provides RS-232, USB and Ethernet connectivity. The platform moreover has sufficient processing power and storage, enabling it to act as a ``smart router'' or gateway. The thesis first presents a classification of control network devices. It then discusses the hardware and software requirements for the desired platform. A detailed presentation of its design, implementation and operation with respect to hardware and software follows.}",
